Wayne Rooney signs Republic of Ireland international Derrick Williams for DC United

Wayne Rooney has signed Ireland international Derrick Williams from MLS rivals LA Galaxy.

The defender, 29, moves to Washington on a two-year deal for a fee in the region of €180,000.

Williams, who has been capped three times, will be tasked with shoring up last season’s worst defence in the American top flight after leaking 71 goals in 34 games.

“He’s a seasoned professional with experience at the highest levels and understands Major League Soccer,” said DC United president of operations Dave Kasper.

“He’s an exciting addition for us and we look forward to welcoming him into the fold and into Wayne Rooney’s system.”

Waterford man WIlliams spent two years with LA Galaxy, making 51 appearances and 46 of them starts across all competitions.

Before moving Stateside, he spent five years with Blackburn Rovers with spells at Bristol City and Aston Villa before that.
