Wayne Rooney shown red card during DC United defeat after VAR rules on forearm to the face

Wayne Rooney received the second red card of his Major League Soccer (MLS) career overnight as he was sent off playing for DC United.

The former England captain, 33, tussled with New York Red Bulls midfielder Cristian Casseres Jr at a corner during the first half of the Atlantic Cup derby at Audi Field.

While Rooney did not initially receive his marching orders, he was belatedly shown a red card for an apparent forearm to the face in the 24th minute following a review by video assistant referee Ismael Elfath.

It was the eighth red card of his career and the first since the ex-Manchester United stalwart was dismissed for a reckless challenge on Los Angeles FC midfielder Diego Rossi in April.

DC United trailed 1-0 at the time of Rooney's dismissal following an early goal by Alejandro Romero Gamarra and eventually lost 2-1 after Ola Kamara's equaliser was quickly cancelled out by a Daniel Royer penalty.

The Red Bulls' Amro Tarek was also sent off before the interval.

Rooney, who will return to England in January to take up a player-coach role under Phillip Cocu at Derby County, has cut a frustrated figure in the MLS of late, berating a fourth official during a defeat to Vancouver Whitecaps on Sunday.

He has also complained publicly about the lack of charter flights in the league.
