Wayne Rooney set to seal new manager role after Everton links

Former Everton forward Wayne Rooney is close to becoming the new head coach of MLS side D.C United, according to reports.

The 36-year-old, who enjoyed two spells at the Blues between 2002 and 2004 and 2017 and 2018, had been linked with the vacant managerial role at Goodison Park earlier this year after former manager Rafa Benitez was dismissed following a string of poor results on Merseyside.

However, despite the reported interest from his boyhood club, Rooney opted to see the season out with Derby County as he looked to achieve the remarkable feat of guiding the Rams to Championship safety after they had been docked 21 points earlier in the season as a punishment for financial breaches.

Now, following his departure from Pride Park earlier this summer, Rooney has been spotted in Dulles International Airport on Sunday evening after reportedly agreeing on a contract with the MLS outfit, who he played for in 2018 and 2019, and is set to continue his coaching career in the US.

Rooney's agent, Paul Stretford, is expected to fly out to the United States later this week in order to finalise a deal.

The Washington Post states that Rooney will use his European-based connections within the game to bolster his backroom staff after his former Derby County assistant, Liam Rosenior, appears to be continuing his stay with the Derbyshire-based club.

One player who Rooney is reportedly keen to try and strike a deal for is ex-Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, who is currently a free agent after his contract expired at Atletico Madrid earlier this summer.

The Uruguayan scored 82 goals during a three-and-a-half-year spell at Anfield, before making the move to Barcelona where he cemented his status as one of the best strikers the game has ever seen.
