Wayne Rooney's response to Harry Kane taking goalscoring record sums up England legend

Wayne Rooney has congratulated Harry Kane after the Tottenham forward became England's record goalscorer during the Three Lions' 2-1 win against Italy on Thursday.

The 29-year-old spurned the chance to smash Rooney's record back in December after missing a penalty in the World Cup quarter-final against France - but has now finally achieved the feat 103 days later.

Kane thumped home a spot kick on the stroke of half-time to give the Three Lions a two-goal cushion after Declan Rice scored the opener after 13 minutes. It was an emphatic finish from Kane, who is now England's outright top scorer on 54 international goals, with Rooney behind on 53 strikes.

However, despite being overtaken by Kane, Rooney took to social media to send a message to the striker as he achieved yet another terrific record in an England shirt. The DC United boss also hailed Kane as a "legend".

Rooney tweeted: "Congratulations to @HKane on becoming @England 's all-time leading goalscorer. I knew it wouldn’t take long but that was quick. Great man, unbelievable goalscorer and an England legend. Congrats Harry."

Kane responded to Rooney after the game and thanked the former Manchester United attacker for his message. The pair were on the pitch at the same time when Rooney initially broke Bobby Charlton's record in September 2015.

Speaking to Channel 4, Kane said: " Big thanks. Obviously I was on the pitch when Wayne broke the record and I know what it meant to him, was so proud of him. Just a great England legend so to hear that is fantastic.

"It means everything," Kane added. "I was so excited to put the England shirt back on and get back out here, start the campaign for the Euros next year and it had to be a penalty, of course.

"Once it hit the back of the net just huge emotion - huge thanks to all the players, the staff, the fans, my wife, my family back home, everybody who’s helped me get to this stage.

"It’s a magical moment. Pretty used to that [long VAR checks] now because a lot of the penalties in every game, the VAR check it so you have to wait a little bit.

"I just do what I do - I practise, I work hard, worked hard in training yesterday, picked my spot and thankfully I put it away. Just a great night, we haven’t won away in Italy for so long so to score and win this game is just special."

Steven Gerrard also heaped praise on Kane and hinted at half-time that he should leave Tottenham in the summer with his future up in the air. He said: "But you’re talking about greatness, you’re talking about one of the best number nines in the world right now and that’s the reason why every transfer window he’s ahead in terms of all the talks because, you know, maybe it is time, maybe it is time for him to move on."
