Wayne Rooney has predicted Liverpool will come out on top in the title race - to the delight of Jamie Carragher.
The Derby County boss was appearing as a special guest on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football ahead of Arsenal's clash with Crystal Palace. He covered a range of topics before kick-off and one of those was the tightly-contested battle at the top of the Premier League table.
Manchester City appeared out of sight at the turn of the year but Jurgen Klopp's men have crawled their way back into it. The Reds are now two behind their rivals as both sides meet at the Etihad on Sunday which could prove pivotal in where the championship ends up at the end of the season.
Rooney jokingly wished there were another two teams in contention but admitted he thinks Liverpool can complete the turnaround and claim a huge win on City's patch at the weekend - which was music to the ears former Reds defender Carragher.
He said: "The game on Sunday could decide where the title goes because the two teams, I don't think any of them are going to drop points.
"They both might be the two best teams in Europe at the moment and I think City's response to Liverpool winning the early kick-off was massive and that is what champions do. When there is a pressure game, they take that pressure away and now they have a very testing game coming up on Sunday.
"I wish none of them was going to. Liverpool are on a great run of form as City are. I think Liverpool can go there and win."
Liverpool leapfrogged City in the table with a 2-0 win over Watford, albeit temporarily, before Pep Guardiola's side replied with a victory of their own against Burnley.
It wasn't a vintage performance by any means but Carragher praised the efforts of their defence. He hopes Liverpool can get back to the type of football they played when they beat Leeds 6-0 in February.
He said: "I think both Alisson and Virgil Van Dijk have been fantastic for the last couple of games, because during that time Liverpool have just been getting the job done. I go back to the 6-0 win over Leeds, and that was a vintage Liverpool display, but it hasn’t been happening for the past couple of games."
On where Liverpool need to be better, he added: "I think they will have to improve their performance level if they want to get the result that they want at Manchester City."
