Wayne Rooney's 'behind the scenes' family update after Coleen 'forgives him'

Wayne Rooney is set to give people a "behind the scenes" look at his family life and his battle with mental health.

The 35-year-old is the subject of a new documentary set to air on Amazon Prime next year titled 'Rooney.'

The Derby County manager said he hopes the documentary will give people "a better understanding of me as a person."

Wayne will open up about his childhood growing up in Croxteth in the one off film, and the pressure of playing for Manchester United.

Speaking at the show's launch in London, Rooney said: "I wanted to be honest and touch everything that has happened in my life, which is important.

"If I do it and I'm not honest or I don't speak about things, it wouldn't be real, so it was about me coming out and people seeing me and my family for who we are and not what is being portrayed of us as a family.

"I want people to have a better understanding of me as a person, really. Throughout a young sportsperson's life they go through difficult periods and there is a lot of me talking about moments where I was really down, I didn't want to be around anyone."

"People talk about mental health, at the time I did see someone at times, it is about realising what was going through your head and trying to cope with the pressure of playing for Manchester United and trying to be successful, playing for your country - then captaining your country and taking a lot of that pressure on, as well.

"They will get a real insight into what was going on inside my head.

"There has been a lot of stuff over the last 20 years that has been well publicised and I felt it was important people saw me behind the scenes as a family man and what it was like growing up in a very tough area in Liverpool.

"This film gives everyone an insight into it."

The former Everton and Manchester United striker apologised to Coleen this year after photos went viral of him asleep in a hotel room surrounded by three women.

In teaser footage for the documentary, Coleen said she had forgiven him for the "unacceptable" incident.

Wayne said in the teaser: "I was brought up to fight... fight for everything. That will never leave me. I grew up in Croxteth. If you're from there, you don't think it's a violent place.

"I've had full on arguments with my dad and he'd give me a slap. I wasn't the nicest kid. I had a lot of fights when I was younger."

Wayne Rooney's troubled childhood spilled into his adult life, but the footballing icon is intent on not being remembered for his actions off the field.

He said: "What people don't understand is, you're 17 years of age... there's going to be mistakes made."
