Wayne Rooney puts 'Coleen release clause' in new US job contract as family stay in UK

Wayne Rooney has already notched his first ‘home’ win as a manager in America – before even taking charge.

The England legend is said to have a special “Coleen release clause” built into his megabucks Major Soccer League contract with Washington’s DC United.

He persuaded bosses to let him go back home if a Premier League job arises.

The surprise move came after his wife gave her blessing for him to return to the US club he played for from 2018- 2020.

Back then she and their four boys went with him – but this time they are staying in the UK.

A source said: “Wayne planned summer with the family after leaving Derby County. He didn’t expect to be offered a job so soon.

“His contract lets him to speak to Premier League clubs if there’s a job going. I think he’ll only return if it’s a big club, but being home with Coleen and the boys would be a big factor for him.”

Wayne was unveiled as DC’s new coach this week and watched from the stands as his side grabbed a 2-2 home draw.

The MLS season ends in October, by which time ours will be two months in and a managerial merry-go-round may be under way.

Last month we revealed how the ex-Man United ace quit Championship Derby to spend more time with his family – but the $1 million-a-year offer from DC was too good to refuse.

Coleen has revealed that she hated life in America when he was playing for DC.

Wayne was also pictured on a series of nights out which hit headlines.

After announcing his return to Washington, Wayne said: “When my agent called me and said DC had come in, I spoke to my wife first and she said this is an opportunity to go back as coach and I am ready for that.

“Had she said, ‘I don’t want you to go there’, that would have been different. I am in a different place as a human being than I was four years ago when I was in Washington and I am ready.

“Of course any major decisions I make are with my wife. My family, for the time being, will stay in England and come and visit. It’s not an issue from a family point of view.”

Wayne and Coleen have four boys, Kai, 12, Klay, nine, Kit, six, and four-year-old Cass.

The family is settled in Cheshire and have recently moved into a £20million purpose-built mansion.
