Wayne Rooney names four players the next Man Utd boss has to build his team around

Wayne Rooney has named four players the new Manchester United boss needs to build his team around next season.

The Red Devils are currently under the leadership of Ralf Rangnick, but the German will go upstairs to work a two-year consultancy role this summer and a new permanent manager will take his place in the Old Trafford hot seat. The next boss has yet to be announced, but he will be thrown into the deep end, tasked with turning the Premier League giants back into title contenders.

Red Devils legend Rooney, who is currently managing Championship outfit Derby, has had his say on the current United situation and has advised the future manager to build his squad around four players.

"I think [Jadon] Sancho will be better next year, Marcus [Rashford] will be better next year. They've got good young players. I think Jesse Lingard should be playing for them because he brings energy, brings quality. Scott McTominay's done well," Rooney said on Sky Sports.

"So they do have some good young players, you just have to get some confidence and get them believing that they're good players and perform at the best level. And then obviously, whoever the new manager is, I'm sure he'll bring his own players in and build that through."

Rangnick was tipped to comfortably steer Man United into a Champions League spot this campaign and hand over an organised side to the new boss at the end of the season.

But things have been far from plain sailing for the German, with the Red Devils floundering down in seventh - three points behind both Arsenal and Tottenham, who have both hit a run of form.

Ajax manager Erik ten Hag is the favourite for the Man United manager's job, but there are a number of names still in the mix including Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Whoever is handed the reins will likely have Sancho, Rashford and McTominay to work with but may pass Lingard in the Carrington foyer going in the opposite direction, what with the Englishman out of contract in July.
