Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has called on Marcus Rashford to "get his head out of his a**e" and break his goalscoring record.
Rooney, also England's all-time top scorer, bagged 253 goals for United, four ahead of the previous record set by Sir Bobby Charlton.
Former team-mate Rashford is closing in on 100 goals for United with 93 to his name so far but Rooney thinks the 24-year-old is capable of catching him, if he steps things up.
Rashford has just five goals in all competitions so far this season and is struggling for form under interim manager Ralf Rangnick. The forward has started just three Premier League games since the turn of the year and was axed from this month's England squad by manager Gareth Southgate.
Speaking at an exclusive event in Manchester and quoted by The Sun, Rooney said: "To get the record and be United's highest goalscorer is f*****g massive.
"What I hope is that Marcus Rashford f*****g gets his head out of his a**e and goes and breaks that record. He is a Manchester lad."
Rooney is currently impressing as manager of crisis-hit Championship strugglers Derby but has outlined his desire to one day manage at Old Trafford.
“I will be honest, the whole reason for me going into management is Manchester United," said Rooney, who turned down an approach from former club Everton to take over after Rafael Benitez was sacked earlier this season.
“I am not ready now. But I have to plan everything I do to make sure that one day it will happen.”
