Wayne Rooney confirms stance on signing former Manchester United star Jesse Lingard

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has dismissed speculation he is trying to sign Jesse Lingard for current club DC United.

Rooney has been in charge at his former side for nearly a year having left Derby County during their financial struggles. The 37-year-old is in charge of his first full season at the Washington-based franchise with his side sitting eighth in the first Final Series Play-Off spot in the MLS Eastern Conference.

With the transfer window now open in Europe, rumours have been floating around about players following in the footsteps of Lionel Messi and moving to the MLS. One name being touted is Lingard.

The 30-year-old was released by Nottingham Forest after making 20 appearances in all competitions. Now a free agent, there was suggestions he may reunite with his former Reds teammate in the US.

However, Rooney denied there was any interest from DC's side in Lingard. Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the clash with Real Salt Lake yesterday, the ex-striker said: "The Jesse Lingard [rumour]? I don't know where that has come from.

"From my point of view we have no interest in signing him." Later on, Rooney was asked about any potential incomings for his Washington team.

He replied: "We are obviously looking, there is a few players we have identified who we will work hard to try and bring in and there is things we can move round to try and do that. We have to be at our best, work at our best and we have to find the best way to free money up to bring players in."
