Wayne Pivac 'turns down' English Premiership job as he looks for first role after Wales departure

Former Wales coach Wayne Pivac reportedly turned down a Gallagher Premiership job for next season.

The former Scarlets boss took charge of Wales at the end of 2019 after success in Llanelli. However, his time with the national team didn't go to plan, culminating in the Welsh Rugby Union parting company with the New Zealander last December.

Pivac's next choice of job would always be interesting after his departure from the Wales gig. And reports suggest that he was the first-choice target of a struggling English side.

The Rugby Paper claim Premiership outfit Newcastle Falcons had been chasing Pivac to replace Dave Walder.

Walder's departure was announced three weeks ago, with reports this week that former England second-row and Oyonnax assistant Alex Codling is set to take on the job at the Premiership basement club.

Reportedly, Pivac wasn't interested in the terms offered to him by Newcastle, paving the way for Codling.

Prior to coaching Scarlets and Wales, Pivac had also taken charge of Auckland, North Harbour and the Fiji national team.

Back in January, he told The Platform podcast in New Zealand that he was excited to see what job came next.

"I will be a better coach for it," he said. "I don't dwell on things too long and I am now looking for the next opportunity to challenge myself again.

"It's that time where clubs in the UK start looking at what they want to do for next season. The World Cup is around the corner and there will be changes made.

"I'd be keen to do international or club rugby, whether that be in the northern or southern hemisphere. We're an open book and I'm just looking to see what may be around the corner."
