Bristol will host a takeover programme of film screenings and events to celebrate "diverse new and emerging talent" in the industry. Called Inspired, it will take place at Watershed from September 2-4 and will feature a packed programme of workshops, keynote speakers, short film screenings and previews.
The event is the brainchild of Bristol’s Cables & Cameras, which describes itself as "a hub for POC filmmakers and creatives in Bristol", opening up opportunities for collaboration. Anthony and Teanne Andrews of the award-winning We Are Parable will guide audiences on how to engage with international events in Black cinema and Somali feminist art collective dhaqan collective presents the premiere of the acclaimed Somali film The Gravedigger’s Wife.

The takeover weekend opens on Friday, September 2 with a keynote speech from Pierre Godson-Amamoo, executive brand director of one of the UK’s largest youth platforms Your Cinema Productions. Pierre will discuss his unique approach to social media strategy, providing insight into how he tailors his campaigns to powerfully engage with a diverse range of audiences online.
Next up, BFI Network presents: A Homegrown Filmmaker’s Journey, in conversation with Mevis Birungi and Sonja Natasha Varela for the Bristol Premiere of film project, What They Left, hosted by Adam Murray from the Bristol Black Horror Club.
The weekend continues on Saturday September 3 Changing Lives Through Technology, a workshop session with CEO of immersive storytelling platform VIVIDA, Simeon Quarrie. Simeon will demonstrate VIVIDA’S use of immersive storytelling to change cultures and lives through technology.
There will also be the chance to join the new Immersive VR project from Solaris2, Virtually There, presented by Leon Oldstrong. It’s an immersive 360-degree film that aims to build an emotional understanding of the devastating impact of knife crime amongst young people.
Watershed is cutting prices by more than half to ensure the three-day event is available to as wide an audience as possible. Tickets across all Inspired events will be just £5 at full-price and £4 with concession, with the full schedule available to view here.
