Waterloo Road's Adam Thomas speaks out over 'unforgivable' character death as fans fume

Waterloo Road star Adam Thomas has reacted to viewer backlash over the first episode of the new series, after a major character was killed off.

The show made its big comeback after eight years on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Tuesday, as some of the original cast rejoined the show.

Waterloo Road ended in 2015, while Adam and co-star Katie Griffiths both left in series four back in 2009.

Kim Campbell star Angela Griffin also left the show in the past, while she appeared across series one to two, and then four and five.

All three returned for the new seres on Tuesday, but a devastating death at the end of the opening episode left fans "outraged" and devastated.

Speaking on Lorraine on Wednesday, Donte Charles actor Adam spoke of the return of the show and the twist.

Addressing the backlash, he confessed he'd had loads of angry comments from viewers over the decision to kill off his onscreen wife Chlo.

Chlo was involved in a car accident earlier in the episode, but it was towards the end when she suddenly collapsed in Donte's arms.

They weren't alone, as fans fumed on Twitter with some saying the show was ruined.

Speaking on Lorraine on Wednesday, Adam joked: "Did she die? I've only just found out... ah man, fans are outraged, really. They keep messaging me like I can't believe it!

"It started off so well didn't it, then obviously the shock at the end when unfortunately, Chlo gets... I dunno how much I can give away. Is it out there now? It's not my fault guys, stop blaming me!"

Adam added that the original series and his first stint on the show was "the best time of his life", so he was happy to be back - this time alongside his real-life son Teddy, and niece Scarlett.

Meanwhile, nothing has been revealed about Chlo's cause of death yet for those watching at the weekly TV pace, but her family were left heartbroken by the news of her passing.

Viewers took to Twitter over the shocking death, with one writing: "Ep 1 of the new @WaterlooRoad season, and they end it with that. Nah, that's unforgivable."

Another agreed: "Nah, I was enjoying episode 1 and then them ruining in when THAT happened? Nah mate, I’m out.."

A third fan said: "Good morning to everyone except the person who decided to kill off Chlo Charles in the first episode back," as a fourth asked: "Why did they bring back Waterloo Road just to kill Chlo off? I’m fuming!!!"

Waterloo Road airs Tuesdays at 8pm on BBC One, and is available to watch in full on BBC iPlayer.
