Waterford camogie club Abbeyside have paid a heart-wrenching tribute to their player Shauna McGrath after she was tragically killed in a car accident on Tuesday morning.
The 22-year-old's car collided with a lorry on the N25 road at Kilmacthomas, around 30kms west of Waterford City.
She was driving home having completed a nightshift at University Hospital Waterford where she worked as a midwife.
Ms McGrath died at the scene and her body was later brought to UHW for a post-mortem. The lorry driver is believed to have sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The death of the popular camogie player has triggered an outpouring of grief amongst her community.
Her club lead the tributes.
In a statement, they said: "It is with profound sadness and disbelief that we learned yesterday of the passing of one of our own Abbeyside camogie players, a beautiful, talented young girl taken from us too soon.
"Shauna... teammate, friend, girlfriend, daughter, sister, may you rest in peace in the arms of the angels.
"Our deepest condolences to Shaunas mum and our chairperson Eleanor, Dad Hiker and sister Cadhla, her boyfriend Liam, her extended family, friends and teammates.
"Sending you the strength and support of the Abbeyside camogie community. Thinking of you all at this sad time.
"May Shauna rest in peace."
Locals in Dungarvan said Ms McGrath, who would have celebrated her 23rd birthday in December, was a well-loved member of the community and was especially active with the GAA Club.
“Everyone is devastated. She was lovely,” said one local.
Gardai have appealed for witnesses to contact them. A spokesman said: “Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a fatal road traffic collision on the N25 at Faha near Kilmacthomas, Co Waterford on Tuesday, July 12 2022.
“The two-vehicle collision, involving a car and a lorry occurred at approximately 8.30am. The driver of the car, a woman aged in her 20s, was later pronounced deceased at the scene.
“Her body has since been taken to the mortuary at University Hospital Waterford where a post-mortem will take place in due course.
“The driver of the lorry was taken to University Hospital Waterford for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
“Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward and any road users with video footage (including dash cam) is asked to make this available to them.
