Water supplies restored in Stockport after power cut caused outages

Water supply has been restored in Stockport after a power cut caused outages in several parts of the borough.

Hundreds of residents were forced to travel to bottled water stations after a power failure temporarily shut down a water treatment works on Friday night (November 11).

United Utilities said some of those living in central Stockport , Bredbury , Cheadle , Romiley , Bramhall , Woodford and Hazel Grove were left with no water running from their household taps or extremely low pressure, meaning water was just dribbling out.

When running water had still not returned to the affected properties, United Utilities bosses opened three collection points for bottles water in Offerton and Hazel Grove.

One site on Offerton Road had worked it's way through one and a half articulated lorries full of water bottles by Saturday afternoon, with workers describing the stations as "manic." Many residents had to visit the drive-thru water station two times a day.

One woman, from Hazel Grove, said at the time: "This is the second time I've been down for water today, it's a bit of a nightmare. I had to go to my daughter's to have a shower. We can't even flush the toilet. There are a lot of things you take for granted. I'm hoping it gets sorted soon."

But at 8.30am this morning on Sunday (November 13), United Utilities confirmed water supplies are back on for all residents.

Bosses at the water company also revealed they would be paying compensation to residents and business owners who had no water for more than 12 hours.

Those affected do not need to contact the company as the money will be paid automatically, the firm said.

A spokesperson for United Utilities said: “Our teams have been working around the clock to get water supplies back to normal for customers. Now that supplies have been restored we will make sure that anyone affected receives automatic compensation over the coming days. We want to thank customers for their patience and understanding this weekend.”
