Water safety warning after teenagers rescued from North Sea for second time in a week

Four teenagers were saved by the emergency services after getting into difficulty in the North Sea.

At 5.30pm on Tuesday, Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade (TVLB) received a report of four teenage girls in difficulty at the south end of Tynemouth Longsands. Eight members of the TVLB attended and found three casualties were in a serious condition.

They were joined on scene by RNLI Beach Lifeguards, North East Ambulance Service and Northumbria Police.

Brigade members assisted with stretchers to move the girls from the beach to waiting ambulances. All casualties were taken to hospital for further assessment and treatment, although all were expected to make full recoveries.

The incident, which lasted 55 minutes, is the second of its nature to occur in one week.

Last Saturday, a girl was rescued who was drowning off the Whitley Bay coast. She was carried to the beach where a woman, who identified herself as a nurse, carried out CPR before paramedics arrived.

The girl was transferred to hospital by paramedics and it was understood she was in a stable condition.

And now TVLB is issuing a warning to the public to take extra care when visiting the coastline.

A spokesperson for TVLB said: "On Tuesday afternoon the team were called to Tynemouth Longsands after four girls were reported to be in difficulty in the sea. The exact events that led to the girls requiring assistance are unclear, but this was the second call of this nature for the team in a week.

"Thankfully, all four received prompt assistance from a range of agencies, and although they were taken to hospital, they were all expected to make a recovery.

"As with our message earlier in the week, we would encourage all those visiting the coastline to take care in planning their activities to ensure they are supervised, safe and appropriate for their abilities and weather/sea conditions. If you do see someone in difficulty at the coast please dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
