'Water rugby' leaves 1.6m in awe of new twist on the game

'Water rugby' has stolen the limelight on TikTok this week, with the bizarre variation of the game grabbing the interest of fans around the world.

Rugby Zone's video of water rugby has picked up 1.6 million views in just four days, whilst also notching up 177,000 likes. It is is one of the most viewed and most liked rugby clips on the platform this week.

The game is played on a 35x40m floating platform, there are two halves of eight minutes, and you can only score tries by diving into the water.

The video is taken from the French competition Tournoi de 6 Stations, who hold both summer and winter rugby festivals that last up to four days. The winter tournament is played on snow and ice.

One of the most popular recent events was Eden Park 'WateRugby', which was held in Toulouse in Port de la Daurade. A legends tournament was played and the likes of Simon Shaw, Louis Picamoles and Francois Trinh-Duc took part.

40 rugby icons are involved and are split into four teams. They play each other over the course of an hour in front of over 800 people, with eight players on each team at any one time.

Fans were absolutely loving the idea of playing water rugby in the comments section of the viral clip, after it was entitled "Would you play water rugby?".

"Hell yeah, it better be contact!" said one.

"I was playing this in my dream as a kid!" said another.

"How do you do a goal line drop out?" joked another.

Unfortunately for the first commenter, the game is touch rugby, so there's no dump tackling your opponents into the Garonne river.

Eden Park 'WateRugby' just completed its fourth year, and is proving hugely popular. There were 650 players involved over the weekend, with the opportunity for everyone to take part, including former professionals, amateurs, students and disabled players.
