HYDERABAD: In a bid to avoid water stagnation, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) said it will be laying 146-km long vacuum dewatered cement concrete (VDCC) roads across the city during the current financial year. According to GHMC officials, 448 works costing Rs 158 crore will be taken up across six zones.
Officials said that around 29 works costing Rs 10 crore stretching around 8 km have already been completed at various places in the city, while 65 works costing Rs 41 crore are under progress at various stages. The majority of Rs 73 crore worth works (247) stretching across 73.17 km are still at initial stages.
For around 103 works pertaining to 27.10 km, tenders are being called while 13 works pertaining to 4.30 km have been stopped due to various reasons. “VDCC roads can be laid in small lengths where water stagnation is a chronic issue. We have done a lot of small patches of work recently,” a GHMC official said.
The VDCC roads have many advantages over the normal cement concrete road, including better strength, durability and ensuring no pothole formation. Officials said the VDCC roads have yielded successful results at various locations.
“For example, waterlogging used to happen in front of Google office in Madhapur but after laying the VDCC road, the road condition has improved,” the official said. In the last financial year, officials completed 385 works at an expenditure of Rs 101 crore.
In terms of zonal-wise allocation of VDCC roads, a majority of works are going to take place in Secunderabad zone which is getting 40.96 km stretch. So far, five works have already been completed, 11 works are in progress while 67 works are in the initial stage and tenders are being called for 68 works.
