Water In Sydney Harbour Looks Like Forbidden Green Gatorade Right Now & Can I Take A Sip?

A lovely little bay in Sydney Harbour has undergone a bit of an aesthetic change after the deep blue water lapping at the shores suddenly turned into a radioactive shade of green.

At around 3pm on Wednesday, residents of Hipwood Street in Kirribilli were shocked to discover the quaint, beloved bay had suddenly become the colour of forbidden Gatorade after the coloured substance began flowing into the harbour from a storm drain.

The locals alerted authorities and soon after, Fire and Rescue NSW were sent to the scene. Fire and Rescue NSW carried out tests on the energy drink-colored water to determine whether it was toxic. However, according to the Sydney Morning Herald, all tests have come back with “no indications of toxicity”.

Maybe we can sip on the forbidden harbour cocktail after all?

Despite all the testing, the team at Fire and Rescue NSW were pretty perplexed about the cause of the colour change — especially since the water had no yucky smell or signs of being corrosive.

“The mind boggles,” said Superintendent Adam Dewberry, per Sydney Morning Herald.

“Because it is such an old, heavily populated area it’s probably impossible to find where it started — there are probably thousands of points, like homes and stormwater drains, which lead into the harbour.”

For a hot minute, the leading theory was that it’s a big ol’ prank or a cheeky publicity stunt for Demi Moore‘s latest horror sci-fi film The Substance.

But it turns out that the fluro water is believed to be the result of a plumber’s dye called fluorescein. Thankfully, according to a spokesperson for the North Sydney Council, it was pretty harmless and already being sorted out by Sydney Water.

“Spill socks were placed into the stormwater drain channel to stop further pollution from entering the bay,” they said.

“Sydney Water flushed the drainage system and by 6.40vpm the drainage network was clear of the green water. At this stage, our engineers believe the substance is likely to be fluorescein, which is used as a dye for plumbing works.

“Fluorescein is a non-toxic substance and breaks down with UV light. The green colour is a feature that makes it easy to trace.”

Well, I guess that’s today’s mystery solved!!!
