Some encouraging video for the 49ers hit the internet Thursday. The NFL’s official Twitter account posted video taken by photographer Preston Smith of 49ers quarterback Trey Lance throwing with Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes.
It’s important to note off the top that we can glean exactly nothing from the video. Trying to decipher what he’s doing mechanically is nigh impossible on a slow motion video of one (1) throw.
The other thing to keep in mind is that the throw came in a controlled workout environment. Even if his mechanics looked dramatically improved, doing it on air does not automatically mean the player will execute the same way in practice or games when there are reads to make and pass rushes to avoid.

The good news is Lance is recovering well enough from his ankle injury that he’s making real throws. It’s hard to tell the extent of his movement before the throw here and whether he’s doing a full dropback or not, but he’s at least moving a little bit and that’s a plus for San Francisco with offseason workouts beginning soon.
Step One will be ensuring Lance is fully cleared and moving well enough to play football. Once that obstacle is removed the hardcore analysis on the extent of his offseason improvement can really begin.
For now, take the video of his workout with Mahomes as a positive, but don’t draw too many conclusions.
