Watch the moment The Script's Danny O'Donoghue rings fan's ex boyfriend during Newcastle gig

Danny O'Donoghue gave one the surprise of his life on Saturday night when he rang him live from the band's Newcastle gig and dedicated a song to him.

After opening the packed out show with huge hit Superheroes, before delighting fans with the likes of Rain and early smash We Cry, frontman Danny and his bandmates made their way off the Utilita Arena stage and into the crowd to the sounds of Irish anthem Paint The Town Green. They walked up to the middle of the arena to take up residence on a second stage in the middle of the crowd to perform the likes of The Man Who Can't Be Moved and Before The Worst, before making fans in one of the side blocks night by heading up the steps and into the middle of a row to continue the show.

And it was during the segment in the stands that Danny asked if anyone had an ex they'd like him to ring and perform The Script song Nothing in honour of. him. Far from being a romantic ballad, Nothing is all about a strained relationship, with lyrics like 'So I dialled her number and confessed to her I'm still in love but all I heard was nothing (nothing, nothing)."

Other lines in the angst filled track include 'Am I better off dead? Am I better off a quitter? They say I'm better off now Than I ever was with her." After he issued a request for someone with an ex who deserved to have the song dedicated to them, one woman in the audience handed Danny her phone and he dialled her ex, as everyone in the arena willed him to pick up.

He did and Danny told him: "I swear this isn't a prank! Please stay on the line, your ex girlfriend want me to sing this song for ya."

Nothing and Danny's unexpected phone call to Chris was just one stand out moment from a show filled with them, with later highlights including the final three in a row of No Good in Goodbye, Breakeven and curtain closer Hall of Fame.
