Watch the moment Newcastle United fans cheer Sunderland's defeat to Cheltenham

Newcastle United's victory over Everton was sweetened by news of Sunderland's defeat to Cheltenham - and the moment fans at St James' Park were told of the score is captured here.

The Magpies beat Everton 3-1 - a Mason Holgate own goal was followed by strikes from Ryan Fraser and Kieran Trippier, a victory that took United out of the relegation zone.

It was only the club's second win at home this season, and the relief on the final whistle was clear for everyone to see.

And as the fans cheered the final whistle, the Sunderland score flashed up on the big screen in the Leazes End, much to the pleasure of everyone in the ground.

Sunderland had taken the lead just after the half-hour mark but couldn't hold on to beat Chelthnam who started the day just four points above the drop zone.

The game finished 2-1.

It marks a tough time for United's rivals - who sacked their manager Lee Johnson last month following a 6-0 thrashing off Bolton and are yet to replace him. They've since lost to the bottom side Doncaster as well as Tuesday's defeat to Cheltenham.

Meanwhile, on Tyneside, things are looking up - a busy January which saw five arrivals has been boosted by back-to-back wins over Leeds United and Everton.
