Watch the McRae Rally Challenge at Knockhill

THE famous McRae rallying clan have teamed up for a special event celebrating their ties with Scotland’s top motorsport venue.

Three generations were at Knockhill for a ribbon-cutting ceremony as bosses at the Fife circuit named a corner McRae to celebrate 40 years of links with the family.

The late, great Colin McRae is still well-remembered for winning the World Rally Championship in 1995. Among those present for the unveiling were dad Jimmy – himself a five-time British Rally Champion – and mum Margaret.

They were joined by Colin’s widow, Alison, daughter Hollie, brothers Stuart and Alister, nephew Max and niece Emmie.

The corner-naming came ahead of the McRae Rally Challenge that brought a host of world, UK and Scottish motorsport stars to Knockhill on Saturday and Sunday.

As well as an invitational two-day rally, there were numerous parades, car demonstrations and interactive interviews.

More than 20 of Colin’s machines were on show, while Jimmy, Alister and teenager Max all took to the stages as part of the festival.

Knockhill director of events Stuart Gray said: “We asked the family and they are delighted that their name will forever be part of the circuit that has featured in so much of their sporting activities.

“And the weekend’s McRae Rally Challenge has reinforced the point, providing thousands of fans with a great spectacle.”

Colin died in a helicopter crash near Lanark in 2007. His five-year-old son, Johnny, and two family friends were also killed.
