WATCH: Striking Lanarkshire binmen take to the picket line

Refuse staff from across South Lanarkshire have formed a picket line for the third day outside the council's waste services headquarters today.

The group, who are members of three different unions, have been gathering outside the council building on Forrest Street, Blantyre, to protest against COSLA's five per cent pay offer.

The union members - from Unite, GMB and Unison - are proudly waving their flags and banners and encouraging motorists to beep and back them in their stance against the voice of local government in Scotland.

It is understood that is a better pay offer isn't brought to the table the waste services staff, which includes binmen and litter pickers, will again take to the picket line on Monday, August 29, Tuesday, August 30 and Wednesday, August 31.

Further strike action is planned on Wednesday, September 7 through to Friday, September 9.

And South Lanarkshire Council (SLC) say they will "not be in a position" to "catch up" with work missed on these dates due to the industrial action.

Unite Shop steward John Paul McAuley, a refuse collecter with SLC, is taking his stance on the picket line.

He told Lanarkshire Live : "The whole reason we are out here is for fair pay. Council's south of the border are offering anywhere between 10 and 12 percent so why not us!

"We would be happy with an all round £2000 across the year rise. All we want is fair pay.

"Everyone is being hurt by this, and the workers are paying for it the most through the cost of living crisis - workers should not be in food and fuel poverty."

Earlier this week Monica Lennon MSP for Central Scotland joined the p to show her support of the striking workers and said: "I joined workers on the picket line on Forrest Street in Blantyre to call for a fair pay settlement.

"Enough is enough, it's time for the Scottish Government to step up and ensure these workers are paid what they deserve."
