Mbeumo Stars As Bees Batter Saints On South Coast
On the hunt for their first away victory of the season in the Premier League, Thomas Frank and his Brentford side headed down to the south coast to take on bottom of the table Southampton on Saturday afternoon.
The Bees came into the tie winless in their previous five games, losing 3-1 to Arsenal last time out, while the Saints were without a win since early November, last playing out a narrow 2-1 defeat away at Crystal Palace.
With less than six minutes on the clock, Brentford took the advantage at St. Mary’s, with German winger Kevin Schade flicking his first-time effort beyond Aaron Ramsdale thanks to a lovely through ball from Mikkel Damsgaard.
Unable to double their advantage in the first half, the goals came thick and fast for the Bees in the second period.
Star forward Bryan Mbeumo made it 2-0 on the 62-minute mark, before netting his second of the afternoon from the spot seven minutes later. It takes the Cameroonian’s goal tally to 13 for the season in the English top-flight.
Brentford weren’t done there though, as they added a fourth through Keane Lewis-Potter, assisted by Mbeumo, in the 92nd minute, followed by a fifth in the 94th minute courtesy of Yoane Wissa.
The Bees climb up to 10th place in the Premier League table with the victory, ahead of Brighton, Tottenham, West Ham and Manchester United, while Southampton remain bottom, 10 points adrift of safety.
