Though she’s just 23 years old, it’s been a long saga for track star Sha’Carri Richardson’s young career. At the world championships in Budapest on Monday, the former LSU star scored the biggest win as a professional with a record-setting win in the 100-meter sprint.
Richardson clocked a time of 10.65 seconds—the fastest in the history event—to earn the title of fastest woman in the world. It was her first time participating at the world championships in her career, and, fittingly, she marked the victory with a joyous outburst on the track immediately following the race, exchanging hugs and handshakes with her competitors as she watched the replay on the screen and retrieved an American flag to celebrate with.

Richardson made international news in 2021 when she won the women’s 100-meter sprint at the U.S. Olympic trials. She tested positive for marijuana and was suspended for one month by the United States Anti-Doping Agency shortly afterward, making her ineligible for the Tokyo Games.
