PSG Seal Dramatic 4-2 Comeback Victory Over City
With just a point separating the pair on the outskirts of the top 24 ahead of the action, Manchester City headed to Paris to take on PSG on MD7 of the Champions League league phase on Wednesday night.
Both sides knew that a victory would put them in prime position to seal their spot in the knockout stages ahead of next week’s final matchday, with the pair enduring equally underwhelming starts to this season’s competition.
A cagey first period saw opportunities few and far between, however Kevin De Bruyne and Savinho both had decent chances to open the scoring for City, but Gianluigi Donnarumma was equal to their efforts, denying both from close range.
The Parisiens thought that they’d taken the advantage on the stroke of half-time, as Achraf Hakimi slotted past Ederson, via a Josko Gvardiol deflection, from Bradley Barcola’s layoff. Unfortunately for the Moroccan, Nuno Mendes was narrowly offside in the buildup, forcing referee Szymon Marciniak to disallow the goal.
Just five minutes into the second period, half-time substitute Jack Grealish made an immediate impact, smashing home the opener for City. Three minutes later, Grealish created his side’s second, turned in by Erling Haaland at the far post.
PSG refused to lie down however, halving the deficit through Ousmane Dembele in the 56th minute. Four minutes later, Luis Enrique’s side drew level, with Bradley Barcola turning in off the post after Desire Doue’s effort rattled the crossbar.
With momentum clearly in the hosts’ favour, the Parisiens completed the turnaround in the 78th minute. Joao Neves, unmarked at the far post, got on the end of Vitinha’s enticing free-kick and powerfully headed in at the near post.
Second-half substitute Goncalo Ramos sealed the deal in stoppage time, netting the Ligue 1 champions’ fourth with a lovely curled finish. With the result, City fall out of the top 24 down to 25th place, while PSG climb up to 22nd.
