Watch: Protesters target Glasgow University as Michael Gove speaks

STUDENTS have protested an event at a Scottish university featuring Michael Gove, after he called for the Israeli military to be given the Nobel Peace Prize.

The former Tory minister is set to appear in an “In Conversation with” event alongside former first minister Humza Yousaf on Tuesday evening.

At around 6pm on Tuesday, dozens of protesters gathered outside the Charles Wilson building at the University of Glasgow, where the event is set to take place.

Protesters carried Palestine flags and could be heard chanting “Free Palestine” and “Glasgow uni, shame shame”.

According to reports, police were met with booing after officers attempted to move protesters to the other side of the street to allow people to get into the building.

We told how Gove said in a column for the Jewish Chronicle that “maybe it’s time” for then US president Joe Biden and his secretary of state Antony Blinken to “make amends” with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu before they leave office.

He added: “Words are all very well, but what about something more tangible? Why not nominate the men and women of the IDF for the Nobel Peace Prize?”

Speaking exclusively to The National, Yousaf said he would confront Gove about his comments at Tuesday's event.

He said: "I intend to put it to Michael Gove directly to his face just how grotesque I think that headline was.

“I've got family members, Nadia's family who've not just been made refugees by the IDF, but some of our extended family that have been killed by the IDF.

“To say that the IDF should then have a Nobel Peace Prize, as I say in my view, it's grotesque.”

The protest was organised by Glasgow University Justice for Palestine society, which said in a post on Instagram: “If he thinks he is welcome on our campus he’s got another thing coming!”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 3.50pm on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, we were made aware of a crowd gathered outside a premises on Gilmorehill, Glasgow.

“Officers attended and engaged with the crowd who dispersed shortly after 9pm.”
