Former Indianapolis Colts Pro Bowl punter Pat McAfee delivered the opening monologue at the 2023 ESPY Awards on Wednesday night.
Though actor and comedian Kevin Hart was originally set to host the annual awards show, the ongoing writer’s strike left the ESPYs without a host for the first time in its history.
In true McAfee fashion, he landed plenty of jokes as he paced across the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. McAfee was only censored once for dropping a forbidden word and most likely will get a nice invoice in the mail from the FCC.
Followers of The Pat McAfee Show will understand several of the topics McAfee joked about. From the disgraced Chiefs fan “ChiefsAHolic” being arrested to an A.J. Hawk urine joke to a Brett Favre lawsuit zinger, McAfee touched it all.
But he also did a great job of celebrating and identifying both men and women athletes across several sports, including some that typically wouldn’t be featured in an opening monologue.
