Wales star Louis Rees-Zammit puts rugby world on red alert as he reveals he's getting faster

Louis Rees-Zammit has put the rugby world on notice by revealing he has actually become even quicker this season.

The winger, who turned 21 this week, announced himself on the international scene during last year’s Six Nations with crucial tries against Ireland and Scotland.

The individual effort at Murrayfield in particular caught the eye and his electric pace was so irresistible that Warren Gatland had to pick him for the Lions tour last summer.

With six tries in his first 12 Tests, the signs are that we are witnessing the early stages of a long career at the top.

And he’s not resting on his laurels, as a stunning solo try at the weekend for Gloucester against Newcastle in the English Premiership demonstrates.

“I’ve probably gotten faster, which always helps,” he said.

“We’ve got a GPS device on the back of our shirts that measures everything in terms of speed.

“One day I will be quicker than the other, so I know I’m getting faster.

“I’ve got a speed performance coach at Gloucester, Dan Tobin. We work on it [speed] every day.

“He’s a great person to have and he’s a bit of a mentor as well. We’ve been doing loads of drills that have helped me and it’s showing. I’ve actually been getting quicker, which is always good.”

Rees-Zammit lines up on the wing for Wales this weekend as they kick off their defence of their Six Nations crown against Ireland in Dublin.

“I’ve heard the Irish are quite nuts, so I’m really looking forward to it. Hopefully we’ve got a load of Welsh fans coming out to support us,” he said.
