Can Forest keep it up and bag a Champions League spot next year? Sunday’s game against Newcastle is a crucial moment in the unlikely journey Forest have been on this season. Having avoided relegation in 17th place last season, no one expected this. Forest are third in the Premier League table, already 15 points better off than last season as a whole, with 13 games still to play.
It’s been a fairytale, but how long will it last. In recent weeks, the momentum has slipped, with Forest losing two out of their last three - a 5-0 thrashing by Bournemouth and a narrow 2-1 loss at Fulham last time out. In between those two setbacks, however, they hammered Brighton 7-0, so it’s not like they’re losing it completely.
Newcastle, meanwhile, have had a couple of setbacks of their own. Their league form was stunning either side of Christmas but they have now lost three of their last four. Spookily, they also lost heavily to Bournemouth and 2-1 to Fulham, before being spanked 4-0 by Man City last time out.
Newcastle have made it through to the final of the Carabao Cup in impressive fashion, with a first trophy since 1955 on the cards. But they could still do with regaining some of that progress up the Premier League table. They’re currently 7th, just outside the European spots.
