Footage from a doorbell camera has captured the moment a huge lightning bolt struck in East Kilbride late last night.
Terrified residents described a huge bang with emergency services called out to a report of smoke in a property shortly before 11pm in the Newlandsmuir area of the town - but the flash and loud noise were seen and heard in various parts of the town.
There were reports online that three properties had been struck by the massive lightning bolt and residents also reported outages on Virgin Media internet and TV last night and this morning.
The resident whose camera picked up the massive bolt, Martyn Hamilton, told Lanarkshire Live: "It was just before 11 at night.
"I was in bed when it hit. There was a very bright flash followed by a very loud sound.
"Never heard anything like it, so didn’t immediately think it was thunder and lightning. Also, there was no thunder or lightning before or after this."
"Only when I checked the camera did I realise what had happened. My dog Nero was on high alert for an hour afterwards.
One resident posted that her mum's "window had been smashed".
Another posted: "In Newlandsmuir and literally felt the house rock - mental."
One man wrote: "It was mental..my da ducked.. maw nearly flew aff the couch...and I froze."
And a resident added: "Actually thought the Virgin box out the back exploded or a gas bottle in the shed, didn't want to sleep anyway."
A worried mum went on: "My two kids came running into my room and my wee boy jumped to the window. I found myself worried for the first time in my whole life about lightning striking, so he got told to stay back from the windows!
"Glad I'll know now forever not to let them at the windows for the rest of their lives haha. Absolutely insane."
There were also reports of an electricity pylon being struck in the Lindsayfield area - with SP Energy Networks confirming 270 customers were affected.
A Scottish Fire and Rescue source told us: “We were alerted at 10.57pm on Tuesday, January 31 to reports of smoke within a property in East Kilbride.
"Operations Control mobilised two appliances to Derwent Water, where firefighters found no sign of fire and worked to make the area safe.
"There were no casualties."
A spokesperson for SP Energy Networks said: "Last night, power suppliers to the area near Lindsayfield Road were disrupted for around 270 customers at 10.51 pm.
"Our engineers restored supplies for over 200 customers within 30 minutes and the remaining 70 in less than an hour from the initial issue. We always work to minimise disruption and regret any inconvenience caused.”
