Manchester City vs Real Madrid: Preview
Manchester City take the home advantage in the first instalment of this two-legged affair but, based on Pep Guardiola's side's form as of late, Los Blancos will go into this game as the favourites in most people's minds.
Neither side will have set out with ambitions of finishing outside the top eight in the Champions League — which guarantees you passage to the knockouts without the need for these extra two games — but City very almost crashed out of the competition altogether in the league phase, only guaranteeing their spot thanks to their goal difference.
Although the head-to-head record is as even as can be (four wins, four draws and four losses for each side), the Manchester club won't need any reminders of the painful exits Los Blancos have inflicted on Guardiola's men in recent years, most prominently the stoppage-time second-leg comeback in 2022 and the penalty shootout defeat last year.
However, they came in City's pomp, with the immovable object of the Sky Blues meeting the unstoppable force of Los Blancos in Europe.
In City's case, at least, they have proven both movable and stoppable this year, already picking up 11 losses so far, over double the five they registered across the entire campaign last season.
Add to that the lack of Rodri, and the addition of one Kylian Mbappe to the Spanish club's ranks, and it looks like a tough couple of evenings coming up for the Etihad Stadium outfit. Nevertheless, underestimate Guardiola's ability to dig his team out of a hole at your peril.
