Maddison At The Double As City Fall To Fifth Straight Defeat
Hoping to put an end to a torrid four-game winless run across all competitions, Manchester City hosted Tottenham in one of the Premier League’s standout fixtures in Gameweek 12 on Saturday evening.
The Cityzens’ poor run of form started with a 2-1 loss to Spurs in the Carabao Cup last month, with defeats to Bournemouth, Sporting and Brighton following prior to November’s international window.
Tottenham, meanwhile, built on their win over City with a hugely impressive 4-1 triumph over Aston Villa, but then suffered back-to-back defeats against Galatasaray and newly promoted Ipswich Town.
Unfortunately for Pep Guardiola and City, their form showed in the early stages of the tie, with James Maddison turning home the opener from a beautifully floated cross courtesy of Dejan Kulusevski after 13 minutes.
Seven minutes later, Maddison doubled his and Spurs’ tally on the night, converting after some nice link-up play with his captain, Heung-min Son.
Not willing to settle for just two, Tottenham came back out in the second period and extended their lead to 3-0 in the 52nd minute through Pedro Porro. The Spaniard was on hand to smash into the top left corner from Dominic Solanke’s layoff after a brilliantly worked counter attack.
A surprise omission from the lineup, second-half substitute Brennan Johnson completed the rout at the Etihad. The Welshman tapped home at the far post for his fifth Premier League goal of the campaign.
Spurs climb up to sixth place in the English top-flight table with the victory, three points adrift of the top four, while Manchester City remain in second place, five points behind league leaders Liverpool.
