Liz Cheney opened the first ever campaign event hosted by her and Vice President Kamala Harris, announcing, "I have never voted for a Democrat, but this year I am proudly casting my vote for VP Kamala Harris..." to roaring cheers.
The Wisconsin event featuring presidential candidate Kamala Harris and former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) took place in Ripon, Wisconsin, a town considered to be the birthplace of the Republican party.
Liz Cheney paused after her Pro-Harris statement and waited for the applause to die down. Just as it slows, "THANK YOU LIZ" chants break out in the crowd. Cheney nods graciously before she says, "Thank you, but mostly, we're not going back."
Cheney prefaced her unprecedented support for a Democrat by saying, "The most conservative of conservative values is fidelity to our constitution."
She went on to condemn the January 6 riot, which she and nine other Republicans voted to impeach Trump for. She referenced the Jack Smith filings released yesterday, detailing previously sealed documentation of Trump's actions surrounding the incident, concluding, "Any person who would do these things can never be trusted with power again."
"So help us right the ship of democracy," Cheney urges the crowd. Her speech ends with more chants of "THANK YOU LIZ!" as Harris makes her way out, and the two shake hands.
Leading up to the event, Cheney has clarified that she disagrees with many of Harris' policies but defends the compromise, asserting, "those of us who believe in the defense of our democracy, in the defense of our Constitution, and the survival of our republic have a duty in this election cycle to come together to put those things above politics."
Other Republicans have joined Cheney in her endorsement of Harris in her 2024 presidential bid, including Cheney's father and former Vice President, Dick Cheney.
