Liverpool vs Spurs: First leg re-cap
Tottenham Hotspur 1 – 0 Liverpool
Goal: Lucas Bergvall 86'
Spurs take a one-goal lead to Anfield the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi final after beating Liverpool 1-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on January 8 thanks to a late goal from Lucas Bergvall.
It was the Swedish youngster's first goal for the club, at just 18 years of age, and it proved pivotal as well as a touch controversial. Dominic Solanke muscled Ibrahima Konaté off the ball inside the box and slid it into Bergvall's path, who stroked the ball low past goalkeeper Alisson.
It was a fine goal from a player who'd shone throughout the match, but the controversy came from the Liverpool feeling that he shouldn't even have been off the pitch. Bergvall picked up a yellow card on 68 minutes but got away with a late lunge on Kostas Tsimikas shortly before the goal, with the Liverpool camp clearly feeling a second yellow card was in order.
"He [the referee] made a mistake in my opinion and I told him that. He thinks he didn’t but it was quite obvious I think and everyone on the sidelines knew it was supposed to be a yellow," said Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk. "There's a linesman there, a fourth official there, there's VAR, a referee and he doesn't get a second yellow. I’m not saying this is the reason why we lost tonight but it was a big moment in the game."
Spurs, though, were solid value for the result, showing the sort of resilience that has so often been lacking this season. Their injury-hit squad took another blow as Rodrigo Bentancur was stretchered off after just 15 minutes but Ange Postecoglou's men dug in to hold off the Premier League leaders, before clinically taking one of their own chances in the final few minutes.
Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur: Preview
Spurs have the advantage heading into the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi final, but many would still make Liverpool the favourites, especially playing at home at Anfield.
Spurs have been strong in the cup competitions this year but that has covered up a dismal run of Premier League form that amounts to a something of a crisis. They sit 14th in the table, their win against Brentford at the weekend being their first three points since December 15.
There is mounting pressure and question marks hanging over manager Ange Postecoglou, but football has a funny habit of throwing up unlikely cup runs for teams bereft of form and confidence elsewhere.
On their day, Spurs have the quality to trouble anyone, and it's certainly not beyond them to fend off Liverpool again and earn a ticket to Wembley for the final. Spurs fans are hungry for a trophy, their last being this very trophy 17 years ago. The sense of frustration comes from having come close in recent years - not least the Champions League final they lost to Liverpool in 2019 - and defeat tonight would only enhance the club's infamy for not being able to get over the line.
Liverpool, meanwhile, are on the back foot in the tie, but flying high everywhere else. They're top of the Premier League table with a six-point lead and a game in hand, and they sailed through to the Champions League knockout phase at the top of the table.
An unprecedented quadruple is still possible, as fears of a decline after Jurgen Klopp's departure have proven misguided amid the sensational form under Arne Slot. It will be a full-strength Liverpool side and an intense atmosphere under the lights at Anfield as they seek the first visit to Wembley with their new boss.
Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur: Team News
Liverpool will be without their star full back Trent Alexander Arnold, who had to be replaced at the weekend with a thigh strain. That means young Conor Bradley could start again at right back, as he did in the first leg.
Otherwise, Liverpool have a full squad to choose from, with defender Joe Gomez available again after a hamstring injury.
Spurs have had plenty of injury woes this season, but they have no fresh absentees following the weekend's win at Brentford. Micky van de Ven and Christian Romero are available but Ange Postecoglou has indicated they won't be risked. The long-term absence of Radu Dragusin due to a knee injury has compounded Postecoglou's defensive headaches, and so new loan signing Kevin Danso could be thrust into the action.
Danso is one of two loan signings made by Spurs in the January transfer window, with the exciting Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich also eligible to be called upon.
