James May is seen hitting a concrete wall in a tunnel at high speed as The Grand Tour's Scandinavian adventure had it's special premiere on Amazon Prime Video today.
The 59-year-old is visibly shaken by the high impact smash and is helped to an ambulance during filming in Norway.
James, along with Jeremy Clarkson, 62, and Richard Hammond, 52, went to a remote part of the Nordic country to their latest instalment - A Scandi Flick.
In the show, the intrepid threesome thought it would make great viewing if they charged around unlit tunnels at an old naval base, at more than 70mph, to see how they got on.
In the case of James May, it wasn't very well he got on, with him losing control of his yellow Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 8, with disastrous effect.
While Jeremy managed to navigate the tunnels, which were pitch black until the moment the car enters each section, at which point the overhead lights flicker on, James was not so lucky.
With such poor visibility and split seconds to make adjustments while driving at high speed, James was almost at the end of the course when he lost control of his car and slammed sideways into the rock wall.
Footage from inside the car shows James being thrown around quite violently in the drivers seat, on impact with the wall.
Jeremy realised that is was quite a nasty impact and immediately radioed Richard to tell him: "It's a big one."
In the video, James is seen walking gingerly away from the car and towards a waiting ambulance.
Richard hurried down the tunnel to the scene so that he could check on James, as he lay on a stretcher before being taken away.
James was then seen being helped gingerly out of the car and over to a waiting ambulance.
Meanwhile Richard, 52, raced down the tunnel to check on his friend as he lay on a stretcher.
Viewers were shocked to see the extent of the impact and took to Twitter to share their support for James.
One wrote: "James May nearly died… #TheGrandTour."
Another added: "Just watching the latest #TheGrandTour episode now. That crash @MrJamesMay.. my god that was nasty. Glad you are still with us!!"
