WATCH: Hamilton supermarket lights up in support of the LGBTQ community

Morrisons Hamilton store shone brightly on Sunday night as it proudly flew the flag for equality.

The supermarket lit up in bright rainbow colours on what is traditionally Glasgow Pride weekend to show their support of the LGBTQ community.

The move came about thanks to James Kane, of The Stage Group, who sets up events and fantastic lighting at venues across Scotland.

They partnered with Hamilton charity Supporting Our Community who wanted to light up the skies of Whitehill and Morrisons as a way of thanking the store and its staff, including community champions Shell Foley and Kimberly Cairns, for their continued support in Hamilton throughout the pandemic.

Shell and Kimberly have worked tirelessly during the last 18 months providing food parcels to impoverished families, as well as school holiday clubs, throughout the pandemic.

They have also delivered toys and school uniform to families across the town, volunteered with SOC and helped with their various community groups from their hub in Hillhouse.

Shell told Lanarkshire Live : "Morrisons pride themselves on being inclusive and diverse - anyone, from any walk of life, can make a working life at Morrisons, so what better way to celebrate this than lighting up our store in solidarity with Glasgow Pride.

"It took months of planning on James' part, and hours of running cable and sorting lighting on the day.

"We were, and still are beyond excited that we were able to let them use our building.

"This is down to our store manager Gavin Penman, and indeed Morrisons, for allowing us to use our freedom within the framework, to make real differences to those who live in our community.

"A special thank you must also be given to John Swift, who was kind and generous enough to provide his drone operation services, which have given us some spectacular footage and photos.

"And to SOC for approaching James and Morrisons with the idea."

Glasgow Pride was cancelled last year due to the pandemic but organisers confirmed earlier this month that the event - which sees thousands march from Kelvingrove Park to George Square and is a vibrant display of the continuing fight for equality across the world - will return on September 4.
