A California family that lost their home in the wildfires this month were elated to find their 100-pound pet tortoise had been rescued from the wreckage.

An Instagram video shared by the San Simas Sheriff's Station earlier this week showed a man escorted by law enforcement reuniting the tortoise with the family.

The tortoise was found in a hole in the family's backyard. Burrowing animals, such as tortoises, tend to burrow to escape wildfires. Fortunately, it saved the reptile's life.

The wildfires continue ravaging Los Angeles County in California, including the deadly Palisades and Eaton fires, which broke out on Jan. 7. Those initial fires are now 75% and 95% contained, per USA Today.

The death count remains at 28 people and more than 18,000 structures have been destroyed since the outbreak.
