WATCH: Emotional tribute as hundreds of bikers lead funeral cortege of tragic Lanarkshire tot

Hundreds of bikers descended on a Motherwell today to help pay tribute to a toddler who tragically died after swallowing a battery.

They rallied at the town's Route 66 Motorcycle diner after the heartbroken parents' of 17-month-old Hugh McMahon appealed to motorcyclists to provide a funeral escort for their baby boy's final journey.

Hugh and Christine McMahon's son, accidentally swallowed a button type battery on Christmas Eve.

The tot was rushed to hospital where medics fought to save his life.

But sadly, the ingestion had done too much to little Hugh's body and the toddler passed away in his parents' arms on Boxing Day.

As a tribute to their son, who loved motorcycles, Hugh's parents appealed to local motorcyclists to escort the cortege from Motherwell Baptist Church to his final resting place in Eastfields, Cumbernauld.

Countless riders made the emotional journey from all over Lanarkshire escorting the tot from the church giving the tot the send off deserved.

Trieda Hill, who owns the popular Route 66, had been tasked with making it happen for Hugh's funeral.

She told Lanarkshire Live : "Gorgeous Hugh sadly lost his life at only 17-months-old very suddenly on Boxing Day.

"He adored motorbikes and his family contacted me in the hope that a few motorcycle riders would give up some time to accompany the hearse from the church and then to the cemetery for his final farewell.

"If anyone could help make this happen for the McMahon's it would mean the world to all the family."

Mourners and riders had been asked to wear a little something blue, such as a ribbon, in memory of Hugh.
