Deebo Samuel showed up to 49ers mandatory minicamp in what looks like a step in the right direction for him and San Francisco coming together on a long-term contract extension.
Samuel didn’t participate in team drills, and instead ran sprints on a side field decked out in 49ers gear.
It’s not a huge surprise the All-Pro wide receiver skipped the team portion of the day considering his contract status and the injury risk. Chances are he wouldn’t have participated even if there wasn’t a rift between him and the team that led to a trade request from Samuel’s camp before the draft.
While Samuel wasn’t on the field for team drills, reporters on site at practice noted Samuel was with the wide receivers and holding a play sheet while watching practice, so there was at least some level of engagement from the disgruntled WR.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan didn’t have an reporters after practice on Samuel’s contract negotiations or where he stands with the team. His presence at minicamp doesn’t mean the 49ers are out of the woods yet, but it’s certainly not a bad sign that he was in attendance.
