Reece James Strikes Late To Seal Point For Blues
Looking to bring an end to their four game winless run, Enzo Maresca and his Chelsea side welcomed an in-form Bournemouth to Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Tuesday night.
The Cherries, fresh off the back of a 5-1 win over West Brom in the FA Cup third round, came into the tie enjoying a 10 game unbeaten run. They were also just three points behind the Blues in seventh place prior to kick-off.
Despite this, it took less than 12 minutes for the hosts to open the scoring, and it was that man again – Cole Palmer. The England international latched onto Nicolas Jackson’s weighted through ball before sitting Mark Travers down with a fake shot, which allowed him to slot into the bottom corner with ease.
Enzo Fernandez, Jackson and Palmer had chances to double the Blues’ lead in the first period, and Justin Kluivert went close for Bournemouth by striking the post, but the pair headed into the break separated at 1-0.
Just three minutes into the second period, Antoine Semenyo was brought down by Moises Caicedo in the penalty area, and referee Robert Jones pointed to the spot without hesitation.
First-half substitute Kluivert stepped up to take the penalty, and he made no mistake from 12 yards, converting his seventh league goal of the campaign to draw the Cherries level in West London.
Bournemouth could’ve been reduced to 10-men on the 54 minute mark after David Brooks appeared to smack Marc Cucurella to the ground, but after a lengthy VAR check, the Wales international was only shown a yellow card.
14 minutes later, the visitors took the lead, with Semenyo smashing into the roof of the net at Robert Sanchez’s near post.
With just minutes to spare, the visitors looked as if they would return to the south coast with all three points, however Reece James had other ideas. Chelsea’s club captain stepped up in the 95th minute and smashed a free-kick into the bottom right corner to snatch a late point.
