It has become an annual tradition for the Washington Commanders to celebrate longtime fan Melba Jacobson’s birthday. Last summer, Jacobson came to training camp sporting a No. 98 jersey — as she turned 98.
Jacobson, a Silver Spring native, first became a fan of the Washington franchise in 1941. On Tuesday, Jacobson was back in Ashburn to celebrate her 99th birthday with the Commanders.
This time, Jacobson was sporting a No. 99 jersey. Of course, one of Washington’s most popular players — and also a Maryland native — Chase Young, wears No. 99. So, it made sense that Young was there to greet Ms. Jacobson with a smile on his face.

Young signed her jersey, which, on the back nameplate, had “Younger.” Chase also gifted his No. 99 to Melba.
Then, head coach Ron Rivera greeted Ms. Jacobson, followed by the rookie class. Young told the rookies to sing happy birthday “loud and proud.” Then, first-round pick Emmanuel Forbes brought in a cake, which led Young to ask for plates so everyone could enjoy some birthday cake.
A job well done, Commanders!
Happy birthday, Melba!
