But the drama didn’t end there. A tense finale was made excruciating as Maeda’s yellow card was upgraded to red by VAR in the final moments.
Celtic held out, though, and secured a gritty victory that has taken them to knockout Champions League football for the first time in 12 years.

Victory for Celtic means they are now guaranteed at least a place in the playoff round.
With three wins, three draws and only one defeat in their seven games, they have 12 points, and could make the top eight if results go their way next week.
Bayer Leverkusen are currently eighth in the standings, only one point better off than Celtic.
But with 11 teams on either 12 or 13 points, anything could happen in the final game.
Celtic’s last league phase match is away to Aston Villa on Wednesday 29 January.
Young Boys, meanwhile are rooted to the bottom of the standings. The Swiss side have lost all seven games and are 36th of 36 teams thanks to their -20 goal difference.
Their final Champions League tie is also next Wednesday, when they host Red Star Belgrade.
