Watch: Car set ablaze near historic Lanarkshire landmark

An investigation has been launched after a car was set ablaze in a field near an historic East Kilbride landmark.

Emergency services raced to a field near Mains Castle at approximately 5pm on Saturday with reports of thick smoke engulfing the area towards the Heritage Park.

It is understood the vehicle -thought to be a Peugeot 307 - was dumped in the field before being targeted by youths.

An onlooker described firefighters having to "haul heavy hoses" through fields to reach the site of the blaze before connecting them up.

The witness went on: "The car had lain for a week or so and was set alight by a group of young men. At first they pelted stones at the windows before setting the car alight.

"The car was quickly engulfed with thick smoke blowing over the Heritage Park.

"Within a few minutes a fire engine drove into the Heritage Park towards the cafe.

"There are obvious access issues as the affected area is neither accessible from the park or from the castle access road, but instead by a narrow dirt track unsuitable for fire trucks leading from High Mains Farm.

"Eventually the fire crew decided to head in via the castle access at Rowan Avenue and take hoses over two boundaries of the field to reach it.

"A team carried a number of heavy firehoses up the hill and connected them together, and at one time six firefighters were involved.

"After connecting about 8-10 hoses they finally reached the car. By the time they got there the blaze was mostly out."
