Watch Calvin Bassey tumble spark Ajax hilarity as punters see the funny side of former Rangers star's gaffe

Defender Calvin Bassey had some Ajax fans in stitches after taking his eye off the ball - literally - and ending up on his backside.

The former Rangers star started at centre-back as they fell to a defeat to Feyenoord in a fiery Eredivisie derby. He's been one of the scapegoats as his move from Ibrox, worth near £20m before add-ons, hasn't gone to plan so far. He's failed to live up to his lofty reputation but has started 19 of their 24 league games and remains a key player under new boss John Heitinga.

After a dreadful few months, it appeared Bassey and Ajax had turned a corner with seven league wins on the spin putting them back in touch with Feyenoord at the top. But that all came crashing down in Sunday's derby as they fell to a 3-2 defeat that leaves them six points behind their bitter rivals and facing an uphill battle in the closing stages.

It was one of Bassey's poorer games in an Ajax shirt and one moment in the first half summed up a calamitous defensive performance from the Amsterdam team. Bassey goes to pass the ball with his left foot, but as he goes to swing, his standing leg catches the ball and knocks it out of his path.

The result is a calamitous tumble and a throw-in to the opposition and slow motion replays show punters in the background in hysterics at the gaffe. A replay was shared on Twitter by fan Marcel Potters who wrote: "Not a bad word about Calvin Bassey from Ajax. The boy is clearly doing his best. These kind of clownish misses - passing yourself - I have made a galore on grey amateur fields." And addressing the fans laughing in the background, one fan replied "Typical Amsterdam humour."
