Foden Strikes Twice As City Throw Away Two Goal Lead
Looking to extend their unbeaten run across all competitions to five straight matches, reigning Premier League champions Manchester City headed to the English capital to take on Brentford on Tuesday night.
City came into the tie off the back of an 8-0 win over Salford in the FA Cup, which followed a 4-1 win over West Ham in the league, while the Bees suffered a 1-0 defeat to Championship strugglers Plymouth in the cup at the weekend.
A largely uneventful first period, where chances were few and far between, saw the pair head into the break level at 0-0.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 66th minute, with Phil Foden cushioning his effort off the inside of the post from Kevin De Bruyne’s inch-perfect cross to put the Cityzens ahead.
City doubled their advantage 12 minutes later, as Foden netted his second of the evening, smashing home below Mark Flekken after Savinho’s initial effort was saved by the Dutchman.
Brentford halved the deficit in the 82nd minute through Yoane Wissa. Mikkel Damsgaard’s cross found Mads Roerslev towards the back post, and his cross back into the danger zone found Wissa, who coolly slotted past Stefan Ortega.
With just seconds to spare, the hosts snatched a late point through captain Christian Norgaard. Ortega got his hand to the Dane’s powerful headed effort, however City’s stopper was unable to stop the ball from finding the back of the net.
