Brendan Rodgers' men couldn't hang on in the second 45, though, with Watkins and Rogers, again, wrapping things up for the hosts.

While the action on the park was engrossing, off it in the stands, fights broke out.

Indeed, what is believed to be some Celtic supporters sitting in the home end were attacked: Despite pre-match warnings, some travelling fans braved it amongst the Villa faithful.

Video footage shared on social media has highlighted ugly scenes in the stands with brawls breaking out between rival supporters.

Celtic fans now know they will face a trip to either Madrid or Munich in the knockout round play-off of the UEFA Champions League.

Celtic will take on either Real or Bayern as they aim to reach the last 16 of European football's premier club competition.
