The music legend held his Wearside audience in the palm of his hand from the get-go at the Stadium of Light, wasting no time in pulling out the big guns, as he kicked off the show with anthems Bennie and the Jets and Philadelphia Freedom.

This show is his final ever in the North East, he says, and is part of his mammoth Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour. The tour began back in September 2018 and will see the star perform more than 300 concerts around the world before it’s due to wrap up in July 2023.

He told the crowd that he was taking a step back from performing to spend more time with his family.
