Watch artisans in action

Alexander Lamont, a leading contemporary design brand based in Bangkok, will celebrate the beauty and sophistication of the decorative arts with an open door event, "Craftsmanship Re-Imagined", at its newly-open gallery at Warehouse 30 on Charoen Krung 30, from tomorrow to Sunday.

On all five days, artisans from the British designer's Bangkok workshops will demonstrate two of his signature crafts -- the art of straw marquetry inlay and eggshell lacquer -- from 10am to noon and 1-5pm.

Visitors will learn how humble rye straw is prepared, dyed to an array of colour tones and inlaid into surfaces to create beautiful pieces of furniture and wall panels that shimmer and reflect the light.

The art of eggshell inlay requires skill, meditative attention and an eye for detail. Visitors will witness Lamont's lacquer artists at work as they create intricately detailed patterns on a box or a vase using tiny pieces of natural eggshell. Reputed for producing contemporary furniture, lighting and accessories, Lamont's unique, hand-crafted pieces are made with noble materials and bring with them a sense of journey and discovery while communicating playfulness, texture and refined quality.

This month he launches his 2022 collection of wall panels. The Le Mur collection allows designers to infuse spaces with exquisite handwork, texture and dimensionality. Vertical surfaces are brought to life with precious shagreen, smooth-burnished gesso, luscious straw marquetry and shimmering mica.
